Halloween Parade Information

October 2019

Dear Parents,

The faculty and staff at Arrowhead Elementary have selected to host our annual Halloween Parade and celebration on Thursday, October 31, 2019. Students will be allowed to wear their costumes to school on Thursday.

The parade will begin at 2:45 pm and will last about 30 minutes. Parents are invited to attend and may check their students out with their teacher at the end of the parade. We are going to parade around the track at the back of the school. The best locations to view the parade would be anywhere around the outside perimeter of the track.

Students may wear masks if they are pertinent to the costume. If it is possible to wear the costume without a mask, that is encouraged. No items such as play knives, guns, swords, or any other type of weapon will be allowed. These items are in violation of the “Safe Schools” policy as outlined by the district and state and will be taken away. Please encourage your children to leave these items at home. We would also like to request that no blood and gore or costumes that promote violence in any way be worn by our students.

We are looking forward to a safe and happy celebration. Thanks for all of your support.

Sincerely,

Mrs. K. Heki, Principal

Service Dog at Arrowhead

September 2019

Dear Parents,Student Drawn Picture of the two service dogs.

We are excited to announce that the students at Arrowhead Elementary are going to be provided with an amazing opportunity to learn about our community helpers in the form of a pair of service dogs.  Moose and Dreamer are Diabetic Alert Dogs (DAD), and will be joining the Arrowhead Team the first part of October. Moose is a 10-year-old Yellow Labrador. He has been with my family since he was 8 weeks old.  He is the “Master Alerter” and does a stellar job of identifying high and low blood sugars. Dreamer is a 15-month-old Yellow Labrador and has also been with us since she was 8 weeks old. She is learning to do her job well and gets better each and every day.  We will have the privilege of having these “Special Helpers” at Arrowhead because my special needs daughter Taylor is a volunteer in our kindergarten and preschool. She is a Type 1 Diabetic, and although she has an insulin pump and Decom to monitor her sugar levels, we have the dogs to also assist us in this lifesaving process.  The dogs are usually 30 minutes ahead with their alerts of whatever direction the blood sugars are going. They are more reliable than any technology we have found, and they allow me to concentrate on my tasks here at school while knowing they will let me know if there is an emergency. Both Moose and Dreamer will be trading off “Diabetic Alert Duty” while here at school.

Both dogs have been through extensive training to not only preform their medical responsibility of identifying diabetic highs and lows, but to also be in public around people, especially children.  They are both gentle giants and pose no threat to the students at Arrowhead. They will be in full service mode while at school and when interacting with the students. They will NEVER be left unsupervised unless secured in Mrs. Heki’s office.

If you have questions or concerns please contact Mrs. Heki (674-2027, kim.heki@washk12.org) or stop in for a personal visit.   We would also like to be notified if we have any students with allergies or fear of dogs. We will make sure that an appropriate distance is kept between the dogs and these students in order to keep them healthy and safe.  Please know that you are welcome to stop in at any time to meet Moose and Dreamer, ask any questions, or address any concerns.

Thank you for all of your support.

Sincerely,

Kim M. Heki, Principal
